Lionel Ferbos was born in New Orleans in 1911 to a Creole family of sheet metal workers. The oldest still active jazz musician in New Orleans, he played in the “Mighty Four” band with Harold Dejan. In the jazz revival he joined the New Orleans Ragtime Orchestra and played in the “One Mo’ Time” show. Ferbos then became a regular at the Palm Court Jazz Cafe, where he continues to play weekly.

“When Nina Buck opened The Palm Court Jazz Cafe, Les played with the band led by Louis Nelson. When Nelson died in 1988 Pud Brown took over and when Pud died, Brian O”Connell took the clarinet chair.” (’New Orleans Jazz - A Family Album’ by Al Rose and Edmond Souchon. Published by Louisiana State University Press.)

RONNELL JOHNSON trombone

Ronnell Johnson is a master of many instruments: trombone, tuba, saxophone, and piano. He plays for many bands, including the Soul Rebels Brass Band. The man has rhythm, timing, and soul—a powerful combination.

As one reviewer wrote, “(Don Vappie & the CJS) … remove the barriers of time… making the music fresh for today’s audience.” In addition to his work as a producer, composer and arranger, Don has performed/recorded with Terence Blanchard, Benny Waters, Doc Cheathum, Peggy Lee and continues to be a regular guest with Wynton Marsalis and The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra as well as guest artist at numerous festivals and venues worldwide.

COTTON MOUTH KINGS
http://neworleanscottonmouthkings.com

“The self titled CD ‘the New Orleans Cotton Mouth Kings’ has been a couple weeks now, and for many reasons I continue listening to it, if not for pure pleasure, then to take notes on the concept of this amazing band. The style of music alone is something to ponder, taste, digest, and yes, relish in the after taste. I’ve heard members claim the style as being ‘New Orleans Swing’, a description which I have thought a lot about, drawing the only possible conclusion…I couldn’t agree more!” (Peter Loggins) This six piece band will keep you swinging from 10p.m. to 2a.m. at the Maison, 508 Frenchmen Street.
